7 tips for job hunting in a tougher market

Landing a new position in the months ahead will likely take some extra effort and flexibility. Fortune's Anne Fisher has advice to help you get the job you want.

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- With the U.S. economy apparently getting ready to take one of its cyclical snoozes, employers are more hesitant to take on new hires than they were even just three or four months ago - and the recent uptick in unemployment means more competition for each opening. That doesn't mean you need to give up on the idea of looking for a new job. In fact, if your company is going through a merger or seems likely to announce layoffs, your best bet may be to start your job search right away.

What's different about job hunting during a slowdown? Sure, the fundamentals - a resume that highlights your achievements and is easy to read, customized cover letters that succinctly tell why you're the best candidate for a particular job, and diligent follow-up (including prompt and impeccable thank-you notes) - never change.

But when the market's tough, you have to work harder at job hunting and be more flexible, say Annie Stevens and Greg Gostanian, managing partners at Boston-based executive coaching firm ClearRock (www.clearrock.com). They've come up with seven tips to help you get the job you want.

Tip for Successful Job Hunting Online from Weddles.com

Excerpt from: http://www.weddles.com/tips/seekers.htm#4

The Language of Success Online

Millions of job openings are now posted on the Internet, but every one of them is invisible. They're open and available to you, but you can't see them. How can you uncover these opportunities and spot the ones that interest you? It's easy … if you'll learn a few simple rules for speaking to computers.

When you open the classified ads in a newspaper or professional journal, all of the openings appear right in front of you, on the printed page. Jobs that are posted on the Internet, in contrast, are stored in computerized databases. Nothing is visible until you tell the computer what kind of jobs you'd like to see.

While all job board computers are different, the vast majority accept instructions that are based on a single set of rules. These rules were devised by a 19th century British mathematician by the name of George Boole. He established the logic by which factors are presented so that their relationship to one another can be clearly and accurately understood. In job databases, these factors are the characteristics you seek in your dream job.

Tips for Job Seekers

Whether you are seeking a job with a staffing firm or a Fortune 500 company, the process is pretty much the same. Start by crafting a compelling résumé. This will help you identify your marketable skills. Then, before you apply for a job, make sure that your skills match what the company is looking for. If so, prepare an effective cover letter and send it to the prospective employer along with your résumé. If you get an interview, get ready for it well before you go. There may be more than one. For example, your first interview may be with a staffing firm and your second one with its client.

This very well-written article covers:
  • Crafting a Compelling Resume
  • Preparing an Effective Cover Letter
  • Sending Your Resume and Cover Letter via Email
  • Delivering a Knockout Interview

Tips: Preparing for a Job Interview

Everyone knows job interviews can be the most stressful part of the job seeking process. I've compiled a list of tip to help you pull off a successful job interview.

Interview Preparation

Research the position and the company. Understand the position for which you are applying. Study the job bulletins and do some online research. This will help you relate your skills to the requirements of the position. Know a little history and background of the company. Working your knowledge of this into the conversation will surely impress your interviewer.

Anticipate questions. Jot down a few general questions that you would ask if you were interviewing a potential employee. Think of situational questions such as, "How would you approach a situation in which your supervisor was breaking the rules?" Jot a few of these down too. Anticipate difficult questions that your interviewer could throw at you. Then sit down and answer the questions you wrote down. Think full sentences rather than one word answers. Another good idea is to highlight your qualifications or strength in answering these question.

Prepare question for your interviewer. Think of a few questions to ask your interviewer. Your questions should be specific and not something that you could have looked up yourself in company literature. For example, "What type of training will I receive for this position?" These questions will not only make sure the position is right for you, but will let your interviewer know that you're engaged in the interview lending you some grounded creditability.

Practice and relax. If you've done the first three steps then you're almost ready. Now you know the company, the questions that might be asked, and the questions you're going to ask. It's time to rehearse. Practice actually saying the answers to your question aloud. Practice asking your question aloud. This way you won't be hearing it for the first time at the interview and then realize that you could have put it another way. Be yourself and be honest. An interviewer can spot a fibber a mile away. Plus, if you're honest, then you already have all the answers to the questions. Once you're satisfied, it's time to relax. Collect yourself and your thoughts.
